This two day SSSTS training course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. Through completing this CITB course, supervisors will be provided with an ability to understand health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively.

The SSSTS course is endorsed by the United Kingdom Contractors Group as the standard training for all supervisors working on UKCG sites.

Delegates under the age of 18 must provide written consent from a parent or guardian to successfully attend.

Objectives

On successful completion of the SSSTS training course delegates that are given supervisory responsibilities will understand:

  • why they are carrying out their identified duties
  • what is expected of them
  • ensure they contribute to the safety of the workplace

Agenda

The SSSTS training course will cover the following:

  • Health & Safety at Work Act
  • The Role of the Supervisor
  • Behavioural Safety in the Workplace
  • PPE
  • Site Inductions & Toolbox Talks
  • Risk assessments and the need for method statements
  • Monitor site activities effectively

Duration

2 days

Assessment

At the end of the SSSTS course delegates are required to sit an exam paper consisting of 25 questions, of which 4 are safety critical and require a short written answer.  Multiple choice questions are worth 1 point each and safety critical questions are worth 1-3 points each.   In order to pass the course delegates MUST answer ALL of safety critical questions correctly.  The SSSTS Course pass rate is 80% (24 out of 30)

Delegates who successfully complete the projects and assessment are awarded the CITB SSSTS – Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme certificate which is valid for 5 years.

Who Should Attend?

This CITB Safety course is aimed at first line managers, foreman, gangers, team leaders, supervisors and those who have, or are about to acquire supervisory responsibilities.

Suggested Progression

Delegates may choose to progress to the 5 day CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision.

Prerequisites

A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.

Overview

This 5 day CITB SMSTS Training course is designed for site managers, site agents and persons who are, or due to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and a workforce. In order to obtain the qualification delegates MUST attend all days of their chosen course.

The SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years, after which time candidates are required to sit the two-day SMSTS Refresher course to renew their SMSTS certification

Training will cover relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

Assessment

At the end of the SMSTS course delegates are required to sit an exam paper consisting of 25 questions, of which 5 are safety critical and require a short written answer.  Multiple choice questions are worth 1 point each and safety critical questions are worth 1-3 points each.   In order to pass the course delegates MUST answer ALL of safety critical questions correctly.  The SMSTS Course pass rate is 80% (28 out of 35)

Delegates must attend all 5 days, in accordance with the SMSTS course programme, to achieve the necessary learning objectives and qualify for the SMSTS certificate.

This certificate will expire after five years. In order to remain qualified certificate holders are required to sit the SMSTS two day refresher course to renew their qualification for a further five years.

Who Should Attend?

This 5 day Site Management Safety Training Scheme course is intended for project managers, site managers and site supervisors as well as proprietors of small to medium sized companies. Client-based personnel would also benefit from attending the course.

Suggested Progression

Delegates may wish to continue their professional development by completing the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management or NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management course.
